Two Old Potatoes and Me
By John Coy
Illustrated by Carolyn Fisher
We saw this one on the Reading Rainbow T.V. series and my son loves it so much I ended up buying it. A daughter and her Dad find two old rotting potatoes in the pantry and are about to throw them out when they have the idea to plant them in the garden instead. Informative, entertaining book and the illustrations are so cool!
My Dad Fixed the Lighthouse
By Martin J. Nally
Illustrated by Christopher J. Burnham
This book is an independent but my son just loves it so much. About a boy who travels with his Dad to a lighthouse off the coast of Massachusetts one summer. What is really cool about it is it takes you through the restoration process of a lighthouse.

Farmer Boy
By Laura Ingalls Wilder
Illustrated by Garth Williams
Actually any number of the Little House series will work because Pa (from Big Woods and Prairie, etc) and Almanzo’s father (from Farmer Boy) all play pivotal roles in the books and are so very present in them. In fact, one of my first thoughts after reading Little House in the Big Woods was how much of it was Wilder writing about her father.
In Farmer Boy, Almanzo learns lessons about doing chores and working hard, being fair and truthful. His father is at the root of every experience, and at the end of the story when Almanzo is rewarded in the best way he could be by his father, you really feel it’s his Father’s pride in him that was the true reward. By the way, this was my son’s favorite book from our spring reading list!
