On January 1, 2022, copyrighted works from 1926 will enter the US public domain, where they will be free for all to copy, share, and build upon.

Among children’s literature, the line-up this year includes A. A. Milne’s Winnie-the-Pooh and Felix Salten’s Bambi. Two major classics!

Below are NEW versions that I’ve recently come across. Throughout the year I will keep a sharp eye out for further publications and will add them in as discovered. Happy New Year, and Happy Public Domain Day 2022!

Winnie-the-

Everymans

Library

By A.A. Milne

Illustrated by Ernest H. Shepard

Everyman’s Library puts out these well-sized, spot gilded, colorful yet uniformed, clothbound covered hardbacks with sewn bindings. I recently began collecting these, so this is a big deal for me! They tend to either feature original illustrations, or to use the work of classic illustrators, and more often than not, are in full-color.  I was just gifted The Little Prince by my sister Jill (thank you!!!), which was published in 2020 and Winnie-the-Pooh is the next of this gorgeous series.

I cannot wait to get my hands on this one, with it’s full color illustrations by Ernest H. Shepard.

Bambi

The Story of

Life in the

Forest

By Felix Salten

Illustrated by Alenka Sottler

Translated by Jack Zipes

This brand new version of Bambi The Story of Life in the Forest is illustrated by Alenka Sottler, who is the recipient of the Levstik Lifetime Achievement Award 2021 for book illustration by Mladinska knjiga, and was also a candidate for the 2021 Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award. Her work is astounding…I’ve found a video (below) so readers can get a sense of the creative process that went into illustrating this book.

She has illustrated over 50 books, many of which are in the fairytale and folktale genre.

Available on February 1, 2022 by Princeton University Press
