Lauren Child
British illustrator Lauren Child, known for her Clarice Bean and Charlie and Lola books, is another illustrator whose distinct style I have come to instantly recognize and love. Her illustrations involve the use of collage – magazine cuttings, carefully chosen fabrics and traditional watercolor. In her version of Mary Poppins for example, she chose various fabrics from Dashing Tweeds in London, and Paris-based Petit Pan.
Her illustrations tend to be prolific and well-spaced within the text. Her version of The Secret Garden differs a bit in this respect, as it contains only full-page illustration, but still, rather well-covered.
I feel her style works well for children’s classics as it is great at holding children’s attention and intriguing their imagination!
Below are her classics and modern classics that she has fully illustrated and are available in hardback. Pippi Longstocking has a paperback version available too (green). The Anne of Green Gables are paperback and feature her artwork on the cover only (also contain an introduction by Lauren Child!) and the Kindle version of William (from the Just William series) is also cover art only.
I hope that you enjoy these beautiful books by this wonderful illustrator as much as I do! See below slideshow for interior peeks!
